Al,
I had the same delima when I bought the Can Do It in June 2000. I coudn't get a surveyer they were all too busy. So I got knowledge from two Dealers. Amazing they are too busy too and will give you free good information on what to look for in that particular engine. I also contacted my engine surveyor friend in Ft. Myers (I bought it in Ft Walton Beach 550 miles away)Run the boat hard and cruise and look for any sign of over heating.I was told my engine should blow no smoke under load or wot. Just a little steam . It did both engines. Most diesels mine included will blow blue smoke on cold start-up but cease shortly after the temp starts to rise. Mine are Volvos but for specific flaws to look for in that particular engine you started here at the right place. Also check on boat diesel.com but believe it or not I got most of my information from a dealer and my surveyor who also just sold his dealership and knew the engines I was buying.The dealer up there wanted over $2,000 for a survey and they were too busy but told me what to look for.Good luck now you have some good information.
