Having owned one, I would disagree with your speed assessment. We would commonly run at WOT at 18 knts with 4 anglers, 3 crew, 200lbs of ice, a tower that was taller than a flybridge model, and full provisions for a day of fishing, day after day after day after day. Lightly loaded, on the way back the boat typically ran 19-21knts.

Tropic Star runs many 31's equipped in the same way, and has done so for over 30 years with few enough problems that they have not repowered.

Qualifying a 31 as a poor performer with 170's I also would not agree with. Check in with John Cranston, his boat runs really nicely with what I believe are 170's.
