Mike,

He's basically correct and is suggesting gelcoat as a fairing compound. The fallacy lies in the area that your wanting to do.

30+ year old bilge spaces have got to be about the dirtiest place on a boat and any material, especially polyester gelcoat must be applied to very clean and properly prepared surfaces. Add to that, that there is only a secondary bond between polyester surfaces that have an age difference beyond 24 hours.

You would be far better off using epoxy high build primer, sanding smooth, (not necessarily fair), and re-priming with Awlgrip 545, and Awlgripping over that.

The "gelcoat first" would be a valid technique for preparing the top sides or hull exterior for paint...
