Phil,
Use either tempered glass or safety plate glass only... Any type of plastic will look wavy, scratch easily, and be just as costly, if not more so, than mineral glass.
I prefer tempered glass because of it's strength and the ability to add either safety film or tinting to the inside surface. Safety plate glass must be ordered in the color & tint you want as a final result.
Addition of any film to the inside surface of safety plate will cause heat build up & different expansion/contraction rates between the two thin layers of glass & result in the outer layer cracking.
