Bilge Paint

Guys,

I am going to begin painting all of the bilge area aft of the engines with white awlgrip.

2 seasons ago I painted the salon bilge with white awlgrip. I found that it took several coats to get got coverage.

A fellow in my marina is suggesting that I prime with Gelcoat first so the Awlgrip does not take as many coats.

I don't want to compromise quality. Is he correct about using Gelcoat? Or is there something other then gelcoat that I should be priming with.

thanks
Mike
