Damn mechanics, what the hell do we know!

When you take your boat to someone to work one, you are soliciting their opinion and expertise.
Here are two recent head bangers.

1. A guy bought a 93 sterndrive boat that had been sitting into the yard for a go over. His wife showed up in an expensive sports car to pick him up and he was adorned with the Rolex and gold acutriments many boaters wear.

He had some scratch, but I guess new to boating judging from the piece of crap he bought.

Tony, the yard mechanic who makes Pat look a diplomat, told the guy to toss out the OMC engine and Cobra drive if he wanted a realiable boat and install a Merc or Volvo power package.
Right away the guy screams rip off, thief, robber and just about every other adjective that describes the maggots we have in Washington.

After tearing the ear off the yard manager, he's gonna take the boat somewhere where they will take care of him.
A few days later he tells a dock hand he took the boat to an OMC specialist at.......Rybovich/Spenser or as we call it...rob the rich and spend some more. It caters mostly to large multi million dollar vessels.

He has had the boat 4 times to them, being towed in by sea tow each time he went to use it and one time not even able to leave the dock. The last time was Friday. He annouced this little tid bit of information to the dock hand.

"I have spent 6 grand on repairs so far, and will spend what ever it takes to make Tony eat his words"
Now if this statement doesn't qualify someone for a visit from Dr. Kevorkian, I don't know what does.

I heard today that the outdrive froze up Friday and the engine harnass shorted and melted.

Judging by what he's looking at for repairs, he will have been up to what Tony wanted to put a new drive package in.

2. I got a call from a guy who bought an AC unit from some company I never heard of at the Dania marine market. A self contained 19k btu 110vac. that will feed a 38' power boat with no ac at all.

After laughing, I explained that at 110vac, a 16k btu was the highest made compressor. He swore up and down the girl that sold it to him was sure of the units performance.

She also said he could mount it between the two engines and duct the cold air up to the salon.
Huh?...................Yea that will work well.

I asked to look at the unit. Upon seeing the AC, I knew right away that it was not even a 16k compressor due to the height. I peeled back their label to reveal Techumsa's AK5512E which is a 12k btu compressor and the fan opening was only 4"x5" and that the fan was ducted to pull air off of only half the coil.

He argued with me and I volunteered to call the "girl" who sold it to him last Friday to see what she had to say.

Now mind you I could have said kiss my ass, you deserve what you get, but I wanted to help him out. Why I keep doing this, I'll never know.

Well the girl never called me back but called him today and explained that yes the compressor is a 12k btu, but due to their special design it can put out 19k btu. Huh?...
And when I asked about why the fan was ducted so small, where as most units that size are either 6 or 7" round openings he claimed the 4x5 had a larger opening than the 6" round. Huh?

He tried to tell me it was simple math until I drew a 4x5" rectangle on paper and then drew a 6" circle around it, completly covering it with plenty of extra, he still argued with me.

Instead of admiting he got took and allowing me to help him out, he basically was saying I was an idiot, which only my wife can tell me.

After feeling the pressure rising inside, I just declined to do the job and told him he is going to be disapointed with the outcome.

This no good deed goes unpunished crap is getting old.
