No, mount them motor up, pump side down, to keep the water from running thru the shaft seals into the motor, but it's all pretty much moot, since none of them last. Buy cheap.

As little as the washdown pump is used vs. the a/c pump, I see only one issue with t-ing off the a/c intake for the washdown - vacuum leak in the washdown side that would kill the suction to your a/c pump, and a simple ball valve in the washdown suction side would cure that. A check valve would do the same, but experience with them over the long haul is not good - they get crud on the ball and stick. A ball valve in the suction side of the washdown in a place that's easy to get at is the solution that comes to mind.
