Rawleigh,
I thought about that. However, there is a little bit of delamination of the melamine and rot on the bottom of one of the side panels. That area is covered by the teak trim planks that go around the cockpit, but I just didn't feel good about leaving anything that had rot on it on the boat. Too picky? Probably, but that's just my nature.
The other reason is because my major restoration plans always seem to be delayed for one reason or another. Example: I had $55,000 saved toward the repower and then agreed with my wife that we should buy a bigger house so we had more room for our kids (age 6 and 1.5). Poof!!! There went my repower plans for this past winter. So while I think I'll be able to repower within the next 18 months and put a new cockpit and side panels in at that time, I'm wanting to make the "temporary" panels look as good as they can in the event there is a delay.
Getting Shambala to the point I want her to be is like that Hitchcock hall scene where you're running down the hall and it just keeps getting longer and longer. The good news is that everyone just drools when they get on her. The bad news is I tend to focus on the things I haven't gotten to yet.
Oh well, if I have to be obsessed with something, Shambala's restoration is about as healthy an obsession as I could have. ; )
