The manual is correct - the injector pump will vent small amounts of air, but damn small amounts. 6B's airlock real easy and won't pass much air before they quit. If you think you have some air, and say you don't have some clean diesel in a jug, put the engines in gear immediately and put as much load on them as you can right away and they will pass much more air without quitting. Very small amounts of air will cause them to quit with no load. As far as when you will know they are airlocked, the deafening silence will give you a good clue. They just quit.
I carry a gallon plastic jug of diesel in the bilge to fill filters and now and then I get lazy while changing a Racor element underway and don't dig out the jug and fill up the filter body. Now and then you can get away with it if you start and go to full throttle in gear, but usually it bites you and out come the wrenches for the bleed job. I can do the bleed in about 5 minutes, but sure easier to fill the filter.
