In Response To: Cummins 6B-210 Fuel Filter Q&A (STeveZ)

Most 210 and 250 installs used the Racor 500 with the t-handle on the top. The correct element for the 500 (30 micron) is the Baldwin PF 598 that you can cross ref. to other makers. The spin on (10 micron) is an AC TP 1067 and likewise can be crossed to other brands.

Use a 30 in the Racor and a 10 in the spin on - you are trying to trap crud and there will be no fuel flow restriction with clean filters.

The Cummins is not self air bleeding, in fact the B series is famous for air locking during filter changes.

Here's how you do it: First, shut off the fuel valve between the tank and the Racor, then remove the top and take the old element out and discard. Then drain the Racor body into a cup and inspect the crud for future reference. Wipe out the inside of the body with a rag, close up the drain on the bottom and install the new element with a twisting motion. Replace the large o-ring under the top and also the small o-ring around the t-handle. Fill the filter body with clean diesel, re-install the top, open the fuel valve and you are on your way. When changing the spin on, all you have to do is fill the new one with clean diesel, lube the rubber gasket with some motor oil and spin on.

If you air lock the engine, first shut off the fuel valve between the Racor and the tank, fill the Racor with clean fuel, open the little bleed screw (small metric hex head) that is on the spin on filter boss, and pump with the manual lever on the fuel lift pump until clean fuel comes out of the bleed screw, then tighten it up. Next, crack the injector nuts on the rear 3 cylinders and crank the engine over until fuel comes out from under the nuts, open the fuel line valve, then tighten the injector nuts up and it will usually start and clear air without having to crack and bleed all 6 cylinders.

If you do not follow this exact procecdure you may get it started in 2011.
