John, the 4BTA is gonna idle rougher than the 6BTA, but 2.5-3 kts. is not feasable with either even on one engine. AJ, idling at 650 rpm with the 6BTA's - both engines, swinging 21x22 three blades, does about 5.5 kts, and with the Capt. Patrick giant rudders I can now steer good at any speed on one, so when I pull one out of gear at the 650 rpm idle, still make near 4. Sure, trolling vlaves in the gears will allow you to troll lower, but all trolling valves do is allow the clutch plates in the gear to slip, like riding the clutch in a car, and wears out the plates, quick.
We fish for tarpon some at Port Eads that requires a speed of about 2 kts max. I just bump them in and out of gear, usually just run one, and watch the lines. A heck of a lot better than burning up the gear plates by intentionally slipping them. Or drag an ice chest full of lead behind. Or full of beer if you are in cold water.
