You'll get nothing but reve reviews from me. Tom Oakes repowered Extra Dry with these little gems shortly before i purchased her, and I couldn't agree more with your comments about being a perfect match. I now have over 800 hrs on them and minimal problems, which I will address momentarily.
On two N-S round trips on the intracoastal, NJ to the Fl keys, I averaged 12.7 gph on one and 13.2 on the other. These are overall figures......when in the 'ditch', the flowscsns barely register,... and at cruise (25k) about 17gph. The boat will top out at 31k @3000rpm wot. They are quite compact which allows for easy (relative) access to routine maintenance. Here in the keys, a routine sailfish day will not consume 10 gallons.
Problems.....a bit rough idling under 900 rpm and then it smoothes out. Broke & swallowed an injector tip at 250 hrs which Cummins replaced under warrenty...new head, cylinder and all new injectors for both engines....again, Tom Oakes made this warrenty replacement happen. and lastly a wobbly shaft in a raw water pump leading to overheating which was resolved by replacement of the pump, which I might add was not an easy job.....had to remove a motor mount to get to it .....and of course it was on the port ....most inaccesable...engine. I had cummins do that job for $800.
I think that it is an efficient setup, economical with excellent performance.
