Garmin G Chips

Went "to the boat" this weekend and puttered around, also picked up the electronics from the broker; Furuno FCV-667 color video sounder, Standard Horizon Eclipse+ VHF and a Garmin GPSMAP215 with a South Chesapeake chip.

A North Chesapeake chip is likely to cost me over $100 on ebay as would chips to cover any coastal areas where I might find myself.

Is it worth it (to purchase chips)? Should I just sell this unit and the chip to defray the cost of a newer unit that I could updated on-line?

Was there an outcry when Garmin stopped making G Chips? Seems like there should have been.
