Al,
I am going to throw in my comments. Since I do own Bahia Mar's, and I am big fan of the potential of this model.
$20,000 for a tower on a bertram 31 sized boat is more than I have paid, but maybe you had more bells and whistles quoted. From the same company check on the price of a top for the driving station on a 31FBC. It should be at least $5K. I am paying about 2X that for a Marlin Tower, and have a lot more room near the action. We have run 6 anglers, and 2 mates all with plenty of room.
The weight of my towers and cored hardtops on my 31's is lower than the stock factory hardtops on a Bahia Mar, and yes I have weighted them. The stock windows alone are quite heavy. I have found that if you put a Marlin tower on, the roll is improved due to dropping the weight up high. We also keep as much heavy stuff down low as possible in the layout, which also helps. On our tower, we are standing 7' off the stock deck height, which is roughly a couple of feet higher than the standard Bertram driving station.
See the attached photos of the available space on a Bahia Mar. Do the other models offer this much potential at the same height as the action? When used as a day boat, which most 31's are no matter the model, the below accomodations are not as important as the fishing visibility and space for Anglers while waiting. Cooking in the sun, or not having enough comfortable seating is a killer when spending days on the water.
Here the layout I prefer on my Bahia Mar's:
