Charlie - I had mine stripped and painted with Imron when AJ got her Imron job about 4 years ago. Painted black, since she had a black rail when I became her Steward, but it was a crummy paint and peeled and chipped. I really liked the look of the black rail. Anyway, the yard tried to talk me out of painting it, said it would not last, but I consulted with Our Noble Leader like you just did, and made them do the prep like Ole Fart said.

Anyway, it has held up amazingly well, no blistering at all, just some dings from pilings. When AJ was in the same yard this past fall, they wanted something crazy to touch the rail up, like 950, so I passed. Went to Pep Boys and got some touch up paint in the little glass jar with the brush in the top and did the touch up myself for $2. Just faired the edges of the larger dings with some 180 paper, wiped it down with denatured alcohol, held a paper towel under it while dabbing with the little brush. Some spots took two coats, but the stuff dries in a few minutes. Looks like new, and even the spots where AJ lays parallel parked against two soft vertical bumpers at my dock have held up amazingly well. My view is painting the old rail is a viable option to replacing it.
