Charlie-
I started to do what you're doing last year, following Capt. Pat's instructions, and wound up a little different...
I stripped the paint, and sanded to 180, and liked how the bare aluminum looked. So, I wet/dry sanded to 320 or 400, which took most of the swirl marks out, and then put a polishing wheel on my drill and polished with the darker stick of polish (the one that cuts the most).
The rail polished up pretty nicely, and I haven't done anything since and it looks pretty much the same--no ongoing maintenance problem, and no paint to nick, etc. The rail looks pretty good--not great--but pretty good. If you're interested, you can find articles on aluminum polishing on the net--truckers polish their fuel tanks, etc.
Just a thought.
