While there may have been tension from the spring that was left it would be best to do a cylinder leak down test.

I would also watch the compression of each spring to make sure they are not pinching while slowly turning the engine over with a socket wrench. While a long shot, I once found an engine with a cam grind that was off on one cylinder that missed quality control and providing too much lift pinching the spring.

Check the push rod in that cylinder and make sure it matches the others in length.
