Broken Valve Spring on Cummins

Went to adjust the valves of my Cummins 330hp 6bta today and was suprised to find that the spring on the intake valve of my number one cylinder is broken! It was running fine when I put the boat away and, the way it broke was low enough on the spring that I still have some tension on it. Was planning on pumping up the cylinder with air and trying to put in new spring. My question is, how concerned should I be and should I just pull the head? Any ideas what would cause this type of problem? I'm thinking that I would have seen some obvious effect if I burned the valve, but...not sure on that one.
