I put in Cummins 6bt 210's back in the 90's. I had Chrysler 440's which if replaced needed a new (bigger) exhaust system to keep warantees and engine box carpentry because they went to square exhaust manifolds instead of the teardrops my engine boxes were notched for. When we calculated the gas engine replacement costs, it came to the cost of the Cummins with no major exhaust or carpentry needs. I went from 20+gallons per hour per engine to 8 gph per. I cruise at 20 kts forever. Best of all, the boat maneuvers and docks FAR better than it did with the Chryslers. Maintenance is fall oil and filter changes and spring fuel filters. Nothing comes for free. Want speed? You'll pay for it in fuel and engine wear. I opted for longevity. My 210's will last me my lifetime (would have needed to replace gassers by now) as they are the base Cummins engine- turbocharged, but not aftercooled. The amount of times the water out here is flat enough to run comfortably over 20 knots is a handful of times in the season. The boat can take it, Me and my guests would rather not. It's a choice dictated by personal desires, needs and a committment to keep your boat. I made a decision that my Bertram 31 Sportsfisherman was my "forever" boat back in the 70's, and have never looked back. Best decision I've ever made. Wish I had done that well with my stockmarket decisions. Walter
