Now for the rest of the story.
Those who own Yanmars, stick up for Yanmars.
Those who own Cummins, stick up for Cummins. Both are backed by manufacturers that have decades of engine experience in all types of equipment.
Most think Yanmar is a recent company. They date back 80 years. Both are good engines, and with proper care will last thousands of hours.
Highest hour Yanmar I've seen is 11,867. It was still running but had lost its umph at top end and the owner opted for a new one instead of rebuilding. The old one was sold as used to a commercial fishing boat.Power and torque vs engine rpm is related to engine cylinder cc's.
The way around this with some smaller diesels is higher boost pressures and rpm.
Can this be a bad thing?
Yes if the engine was never really designed for it as in trying to get 700hp out of a 6-71.All the engines in the Cummins and Yanmar line are designed for the output it produces vs rpm curve.
Yes the Yanmar line does run higher rpms than Cummins. Not a bad thing since they are designed for it just like a Nascar engine will run up to 9000 rpm, unlike a standard car engine.
Dealer service and pricing can be a factor.
You are more likley to find someone who will work on a Cummins, than a Yanmar in a general boat yard setting.Yes some Cummins parts are available from Pep Boys unlike Yanmar. But replacing a starter or altenator has been a rare occurance and caused mostly from poor maintenance and salt corrosion.
While a Yanmar may look more complicated, it has the same items as the Cummins, just a little more compact and streamlined which does make it slightly more time consuming to work on.
The only extra's are air box heaters to control cold start smoking on some models and a waste gate turbo on the 6LP.
While The serpentine belt is self adjusting, it produces just as much dust as the v-belts.
The worst thing for any engine is letting it sit with little or no use and lack of maintenance.
Nothing will survive long in that environment.
