SoCal Fish Story

This past week there was some big, swirlly storm south of Alaska that sent a big NW swell down this way. Our beaches had 8-10 foot surf. So a couple of friends called me up and said they wanted to surf the NW swell at the outer islands. Checking NOAA I found 6-8 foot swells in the channel but with a 17 second period and no wind. My little B31 covered the 65 miles to the backside of San Clemente Is. in three hours, no problem. These guys found the area they wanted to surf, put their wet suits on and out of my boat in 62 degree water they went. I stayed a quarter mile out and fished for bass. These guys are crazy even though they are well into their forties. They were surfing 12-14 foot waves and they said a few had 20 foot faces. I'm sitting in my little B31 with a cold beer fishing and watching with the binocs. I've never seen anything like these nut-cases. They come back after 2 hours talking about the biggest surf they have seen in 20 years and proceeded to drink the rest of my beer. I tried to explain to them that there was some really good bass fishing but they weren't interested. I put the B31 on autopilot and raced home down some really big swells. Even though I've got the small rudders, the boat tracked very well down swell. A much dryer ride than my old boat that would have been plowing its bow more. I love my B31.
