word of advice on shafting

This is not to take away from anyone trying to sell their old shafting.

The shaft is one of the most important pieces in the drive line. More vibration, wear and breakage can be attributed to shafts.

Using a used shaft from another boat, unless your stuck in BFE, is not a wise move.

Unless it is tested, you don't know its straight. It could have been straight on the boat but let it drop ever so slightly on the ground and you just bent it.
Any pitting while seemingly small on the surface could be the sign of worse things underneath.
Grooves from the stuffing box and cutlass just add to excess clearances.
Proper key way cutting is important and most old shafts don't have it.
Determining wheather you have an A22 shaft unless its known for sure is next to impossible.

The only way I would recommend using a used shaft is if I pulled it off the boat myself, knew it was made not long ago and have no wear to it.

Props and shafts are an expendable commodity on a boat.

I got 20 pairs of shafts and numerous individuals lying around the shop that I couldn't give away if I wanted to because the smart guys I deal with don't want nothing to do with used shafts.

This is one area you don't want to mess with.

Slight vibrations in the drive line, while they may be acceptable to you while running, cause excessive bearing wear and damage to your gear and engine.

Now I understand that some NE dwellers have wallet shock when having to buy things. The dead presidents when pulled out all have sun glasses on because they've been keep in the cave so long.

What are you saving them for? Retirement?
You'll work all your life and drop dead of a heart attack the day after retirement anyway. Then the wife will entertain Raul, the cabana boy with your hard earned money.

Why give her the satisfaction.

Forget the kids. They'll just waste your money on frivolus things anyway.
Besides, let them earn their own money. Its not like you havn't funneled enough their way already.

Treat your boat to nice new things.

If you love your boat, they will love you back without nagging you like a cheap tv preacher looking for donations.

Have you hugged your boat today?
