Capt Dave,
There is no specific time frame like an oil change.
Shallow water running in sandy water can wear them out quickly.
Stirring mud up in the slip or shallow water can do the same.Inspect them when the impellers are changed for wear. Keeping a spare cam as a reference is handy as a comparison.
I usually replace them on my boats that I've set up a maintenance schedule every 4 years or 400 hours.
On pumps that have a 350.00 dollar or less replacement cost I replace the impeller after two years and after 4 years I replace the whole pump.
One thing to remember is that when the cam wears so does the inside of the pump housing which also affects flow.
