I put the 8.1s in a 35 last year - Mercruiser 370hp. So far I've put an add'l 1.5" of pitch in the wheels and it looks like I'll need another .5" to bring them down to 150 over top end of 4600. Previous poster is correct in that the torque curve is really high in the HOs - something like 3600 vs. 3200. The package was shorter than the replacements but height is an issue - had to do some 'mods' on stringers in the house sole to clear the risers and the flame arrestor barely fit within clearance specs. The Mercs use a SS/Alum riser/manifold and seems to be a bit lighter than the 454s, that combined with them sitting back 6"~ inches or so has changed CG a minor bit - boat seems happier w/full fuel. Good luck. Alan.
