Phil:

I'm not sure if you are modifying the existing top, or building a new one. In either case, the strength to hold up the top is not going to be from the core material, it is going to be from the actual aluminum structure. Don't rely upon the strength of the fiberglass skin to support any weight.

My halftower has a 3/8 fiberglass skin which sits on an aluminum frame. The radar sits atop the bimini bows and is supported by an aluminum frame which is welded to the bimini bows. The radar is bolted to a small (about 8") standoff that is through bolted through the fiberglass skin into the aluminum subframe.
