Al, I don't think there is anything a broker can do about you contacting an owner directly. However, if the owner signed a contract of some sort with the broker, then the broker would be entitled to some compensation even though he sucks. Document that you tried to contact the broker when, how many times etc. etc. and deal with the owner. You may be pleasantly surprised as was said earlier and save about $10k. IF there was a contract, your documented calls, e-mail etc. would help the owner show breech of contract if he wants to sell you his boat.
From what I've learned, many of these guys will show a boat no matter who is the principle broker and without contracts with owners. The language in the Purchase agreement, if they get that far, locks in their cut.
No, I'm not a lawyer, but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night...
....Really, I just bought a 1970 sportfish directly from an owner that had it listed on a couple of brokerage sites. He hadn't signed anything so all went well.
