Kevin - I have the Garmin 2010C plotter and the black box sounder using a shoot thru the hull ducer. I love it. It will track the bottom in about 250' at 24 kts and about 400' going slow. An external ducer would double that easy. I have a free standing SiTex color bottom machine with an external ducer for deep work, but the Garmin works so much better for 99% of what I do, it is a no brainer for about $300 extra including the in hull ducer.
