Drill trick

AJ's cocktail table varnish job is done, 11 coats and it looks great. So this afternoon it was time to mount the fighting chair spider to the underside of the table. I had the guy that built the table glue & screw a 12"x12" x 3/4" mahogany block to the underside of the 1" mahogany table to mount the spider on. So I had a inch and 3/4 to put three 3/8 x 1.5" stainless lag bolts into. The thickness of the holes in the spider is about 1/2", so a lot of measuring and testing on scrap wood told me I needed about a 1" drill pilot hole. So how to keep from drilling too deep? Could not use my usual clamp on drill stop as it was too wide for the recessed holes in the spider. So I had a clear or 3 and thought about it, and ended up cutting some hard plastic tubing I had around the shop that would fit over the 1/4" drill bit to control the depth of the drill. Tested in scrap, then did the deed on the finished table. Bingo. Put some Ultra Tef Gel on the ss lag bolts and washers thru the aluminum spider, torqued them down and it worked perfect.
A simple trick to control depth in a recessed area.
