Rawleigh - the Sherwood guy probably don't have a clue. Just because it's a big, long-established company don't mean squat. Their pumps suck. It's been a huge issue for several years, and Tony Athens finally took the bull by the horns, had a lab figure out what's wrong with the impellers and the pump materials. The results of the independent lab tests were shocking. You can see them on the Cummins B forum on boatdiesel.com. Bottom line is Sherwood has scrimped on the impeller materials and pump metals to the point the damn things are now short-term throw-aways. Tony has designed an impeller using a real naval bronze bushing, some heavy duty neoprene rubber blades, about twice as thick as the current flimsy Sherwood ones, and is working on some naval bronze replacement pumps and parts, including the cam and wear plates. Sherwood has dropped the ball big time. Years ago the impellers would last a thousand hours, the pumps many thousands. Now an impeller will just blow up into tiny fragments in a hundred hours or less than a year. The metal the pumps are made of now (the lab test shows about 70% 'mystery metal') is so soft as to be near useless. The current cams are made of a harder brass, and after a short time the pump bore wears more than the cam and makes the cam edges into razor blades that shred the impeller. Bruce fixed one of mine at a UVI a couple of years ago by filing down the edges of the cam to get us home.
Feel free to forward this to the Sherwood guy, but Tony has got the jump on them. I've never had this problem with Jabsco pumps, including my old A/C pump that had about 20,000 hours on it in my houseboat before I put it in AJ. Finally chaged it because Jabsco quit making parts for the old one. New Jabsco will pump like a fire truck after thousands of hours.
