Spent yesterday afternoon & this morning going over routine maintaince on AJ and in the process rezalized how many things I've learned from the Faithful on this site. Little tricks or products that make keeping The Best Boat Ever Built up to better than new condition. So I decided to just list some of these that have worked for me.
1. Corrosion X: the magic in a can for electrical, mechanical and general crud-proofing anything - tackle, guns, anything.
2. Da Judge's pink battery potion from JC Whitney that appears to bullet proof lead acid batteries. I watered my 4 year old 8D's yesterday and was again amazed that the two batteries took less than a quart of water between them after 6 months, and she has an onboard charger that stays on all the time.
3. Ultra Tef Gel, the magic paste/grease for dissimilar metals, lubing any threads, and especially nylon lock nuts. Stainless fasteners in aluminum will never corrode, never.
4. Penetrox, the conductive grease for electrical connections. After you solder or before you crimp put some on and the joint will last forever.
5. Penetraol - the paint additive that will restore faded Formica to new.
6. Capt. Patrick's oversize rudders - totally change the way a B31 handles. An essential.
7. PropScan - so much better than the old coonass eyeball method for maximizing your props.
8. Imron 5000 paint - same stuff used on Corvettes. Brillian, repairable, and durable.
9. Stamoid fabric for tops and enclosures. Seems to last forever and is very supple. So slick nothing sticks to it. Strataglass clean vinyl. Does not yellow, scratch or tear. GoreTex thread to sew the Stamoid. Lifetime. YKK spiral zippers with Delfin teeth. Forever. The new cleaner and polish just for Strataglass is superior to the insulator wax.
10. Poly Glow - a good alternative for restoring faded fibergalss.
11. Flitz metal polish - way the best for chrome, stainless, and aluminum.
12. Algae-X magnetic diesel fuel filter/conditioners. Reduce smoke, crud in filters, and increase fuel economy by 10%.
13. Amazon teak oil - lasts 3 times longer than any other.
14. Soundown - great product for noise reduction and great customer support.
15. S&B hi performace air filters for diesels from Tony Athens. 20% more air flow than K&N.
16. The Dawn/water turbo wash. Magic for diesels for a couple of bucks.
17. Shell Rotella-T 15w 40 motor oil for Cummins. Fleetguard premium oil filters for the same. Balwin Racor elements, just as good and half the price.
18. Aluma Brite acid for aluminum cleaning or rest stain removal. Magic.
19. Icom VHF and SSB radios. The best, especially the old 125, 126 & 127 heavy duty commercial models.
20. Garmin's 2010C plotter with the black box sounder. Far & away the best for old blind folks.
21. The older Raytheon radars. Seem to last forever.
22. Si Tex's SP 70 autopilot - 11 years with no problems, just regular shots with CX.
23. Sea Star hyd. steering. No pressure tank, smooth, strong, again, CX regular and it will last a long time.
24. Mil Spec aviation red hyd. fluid for SeaStar and other systems. 1/10 the cost and red so you can see leaks.
25. Cruisaire air conditioning with reverse cycle heat. Don't forget the CX on the back of the control panel.
26. Kubota powered diesel gensets. Run forever.
27. Anti Bond 2015 - will remove cured 5200.
28. Ancor narine wire - the best.
29. AwlSpar varnish. Easy.
OK, that's all I can think of. Ya'll chime in to the list, let's get a thread suitable for framing.
