Monel Shafts have the same aprox. strenght as A22 but they don't fatigue anywhere as easy as the Stainless shafts. Also they provide better corrosion resistance. Mine have been on the boat for almost twenty years.
To give you an idea, 1-1/4 monel shafts are acceptble for our 31's with the little 210hp Yanmars(1:1 reduction only) Stainless shafts in any grade would not hold up.

The cost is usually a third to twice the cost of Stainless.
