John:
Replacing the hose is only a good idea in theory. It will involve removing the existing shaft (which you've already said is damaged) replacing the hose with a new one, then putting the shaft back in. Getting the shaft in and out is the time consuming part of this job - the rest simply involves driving to and from a machine shop to get the new one amd writing a check- and even that could be eliminated by having the shop deliver. Its just not worth trying to put a band-aid on this. ...having shafts break is, at minimum and loud, scary event that can cause mucho inconvienence in your boating enjoyment (and you'll still need to get a new shaft and maybe prop)...at worst, the shaft could break at the coupling and fall out (after the prop hits your rdders and damages them) and now you'll have a MAJOR leak, on top of the major inconveinence and you'll still need to replace the shaft in addition to replacing the prop and maybe a rudder and god knows what else.
