Shaft savers are nice, down side is if you get stuck someplace you better have a spare as not many places stock them. At least not yet. Same goes for the polymer bearings such as Thorden.
A19 is great if you are always using the boat, such as many commercial guys, trawlers, shrimpers etc. Down side is it is less corrosion resistant. Let the boat sit for days and you have to worry about crevice corrosion. Thats when the water gets trapped between the shaft and cutless stagnates and does some funk to the shaft. As said before you need to rotate the shaft to avoid this.
A22 is the material of choice. Its all I stock. If the one shaft only has only .005 wear, keep it in, just check for straightness and additional wear at the stuffing box. I would however ask to get the cutless area smoothed out if rough. That will let the cutless last longer. I usually touch with a portable belt sander as the shaft rotates, but can be done with a strip of fine emery. Just want to remove the high spots.
