In Response To: Cleaning Turbos (Capt. Randle Hall)

Randle - here you go - this is Tony Athens' method from boatdiesel.com and works like a charm on any diesel, turbo or not:

Get two plastic pump bottles, say a quart each, from the garden center. In one bottle put 8 oz. of distiled water and slowly mix in one oz. of Dawn. Do not shake or it will bubble. Put 6 oz. of pure distilled water in the other bottle. I mix up a little more than double the Dawn/water in the first bottle so I don't have to re-mix for the second engine, likewise put about 12 oz. of pure distilled water in the second bottle.

Take the air cleaners off and run the boat up to cruise speed (can't do at the dock, must be underway) until engines come up to normal cruise temps. Slowly spray 9 oz. of the Dawn/water mix into the turbo intake on the first engine. Use a solid stream vs. a mist, and take about 3-4 minutes to spray in. Then spray 6 oz. of pure distilled water in over about 2-3 minutes and that's it. Repeat for other engine.

Does a great job of cleaning the turbo, aftercooler, injector tips, and combustion chamber of carbon.
