I'm with the experts (Carl, for example) on shafts. They are an expenible item, they wear out, period. My experience is that with a diesel boat, where there is a lot more torque applied, they are good for about 1500 hours then you better be thinking about changing them out. Diesel boats tend to run heavier props (lbs, due to more diameter) and the sheer weight of the prop sitting on the shaft for months without turning will cause stress cracks in the shaft between the strut and the prop hub. That's why the shafts should be turned, either by hand or by bumping in and out of gear, as often as you can to spread the load.
AQ 22 is far and away the best. I agree that zero to .010" is the tolerance for wobble. Otherwise you start tearing up everything, mounts, couplings, struts, stuffing boxes. You absolutely have to torque the gear/shaft coupling bolts to spec. Also make sure some bonehead has not put the wrong (too small) size bolts in the coupling or you will get shaft wobble from the slop in the bolt holes.
