shaft wear

I just had my shafts checked out and there seems to be a little bit of wear on the port side where the shaft goes through the cutlass bearing. When I slide the cutlass bearing over the shaft there is a slight bit of play (not much though). The shafts are true but the one in question has a slight bit of wear at the cutlass bearing to the point that you can feel the step-down in diameter even by touch. The machine shop suggested I get a new shaft (aquamet) and said it would be about $500 for the tapering and complete fit. First of all, how much if any wear is acceptable where the shaft goes through the cutlass bearing and secondly, is this a pretty reasonable quote. Thanks in advance.
