RAW WATER INTAKE

i have a 1971-31flb and the water intake for engines is under the shafts,is that about the right place fir them ,all others i have seen are in the belly,wondering if i need to relocate,i am going to repower with diesels later on ...they are really close to the shafts...any in-put or info on this ???
