If my weakened memory is correct, the 504 and 555 were built off the same block with the bore being the big difference. This is like the Ford 351M and 400. Same block, just one under-bored.
The 504 and 555 were both available at the same time. I've seen 555's in early B31's so that one might have been built earlier.
