Bob,
NMEA like any other "pay to belong" organization is not a neutral thinker.
While organizations like this do help to create standards in the marine industry, taking money from companies to be members does have its problems.Raymarine in the past has been garbage as far as electronics was concerned. JRC got involved with them and the electronics improved vastly.
I think that may be partly what the award was.Garmin on the other hand has been a steady, reliable elctronics manufacturer who some times gets over looked. Their products are not cheap and pricing may also be a factor in Raymarines recognition.
In the last year I have installed more 2010's than I care to recall and electronics is not a big part of my business.
Product innovation can be good in some ways and bad in others. The more functions that are available, the more complicated they become to use. End user friendly status is very important.
In my opinion the only way to buy any device nowadays is to hang out and ask people who own them and how they perform and the ease of operation.
I have saved myself many headaches in the past.
Hang out at your marina and others and ask around what everyone is using and how they like it.
There's nothing like getting the consumers opinion of things.
