Bill - think you are close to the answer already. The other '5' is probably the month of manufacture, May. Now the '88' menas nothing to me, but who knows how the number got on your registration, could be a typo, brain fart, etc. The uniform federal imprint #s on the upper stb. transom became law in Nov. 1972, so we know your boat was before that.
