Norfolk to Middle River Run

Pending surveys I hope to be taking delivery of my 28 Bertram in Norfolk, VA and will need to run her up the bay in early April. I am an experienced boater but not on the Chesapeake (Lake Erie).

1. Assuming a cruising speed in the low to mid 20's how long of a run is this in hours?

2. Should I stick to the shipping lanes (seems boring) or is it realtively safe to stay a mile or so off shore and consult my charts for reefs and hazards?

3. I'm thinking this will need to be a two day trip, does Chesapeake Beach make sense as an overnight spot? Too far north? Alternate stop over?

4. All suggestions, recommendations and cautions are welcome.
