Many different schools of thought on this topic. Some will say you don't need them, others will say that it's a good idea to have them. Basically I will say this. I would not recommend that you run out and get tabs if you don't have them, but if you do already have them I would leave them on the boat. I have operated 2 boats over the last 30 years and both had trim tabs. Many will say that they cut off fish, but in those 30 years, I have never lost a fish in the tabs. More than likely on the 31 you will lose a fish on the props or the rudders.
Persoanlly, I still have tabs on my 31. Love them. Wouldn't own a boat without them, but that's my personal preference. They allow you to adjust for weight distribution of load and passengers, and adjust for sea conditions. Also I am able to dial in my fuel efficiency while watching my floscans and playing with the tab buttons. For the most part I find that she runs best with the tabs retracted, however in rough head seas it's nice to bring the bow down and slice through the waves for a smoother ride as opposed to flying from one wave into another, which was personally witnessed last year riding home from the AC Renmdezvous with another 31 that had no tabs. Bottom line is this.......
it is better to have something and not need it, than to need something and not have it.Harv
