Bob & Marshall,

Starboard is fine for a backing plate... The trick to a water tight installation, (applies to any backing plate material), is to only tighten the nut down to finger tight, let the bedding compound set up completely, and then tighten the nut down completely. This squeezes the cured bedding and completes a compressed gasket.
