Like Chiles said, isolators are on the charging side of the system, not the starting side.

If you can start the engine, put a meter on the output of the alt and check voltage, it should be at around 13.6vdc.

Then check each battery for voltage and see if they read the same. The voltage will be lower at the batteries than the alt because isolators will drop voltage. As much as 1 volt which leads to poorly charged batteries all the time.
This will tell you if the isolator is working.

The reason why the jump button or paralell switch won't work is because its coil may be fed from the dead battery.

The proper way to do it is use a spdt momentary switch that uses either battery to operate the coil on the jump.
