I saw an ad on Boatdiesel from Tony Athens of Seaboard Marine for a pair of DD 8v-71's for 8k. The following is his reply to my questions:

The 8-71's are way too large for a 33 Bertram......You need a set of Cummins 6BTA's or something of similar dimensions ( about 5-6 L at 1200-1500 lbs each w/ gears and around 300-350 HP each ......

See below IF you want a fully guaranteed engines and new transmissions that is RIGHT for your boat...

Cummins has recently introduced factory remanufactured Cummins Diamond Edition marine engines that carry a full 1 year 2000 hour warranty. These engines look and perform as new, and are complete--just like a new engine including all new deluxe VDO instruments, etc.. Most all of the parts to build these engines are BRAND NEW, including the entire seawater system, entire electrical system and instruments/harnesses, cylinders, pistons, bearings, valves, seals, all gaskets, bolts etc.. About the only thing that may be (usually not) re-manufactured is the block, head, injection pump and injectors, and crankshaft. No installation review is required, although all installation guidelines and requirements, and owner responsibilities, are the same as with a new Cummins Diamond.......Leads times are about 60 days (just like new) and right now, only the 430/450 8.3 C series, 210/220 6BT 5.9, 300 and 370 Diamonds are available..................

You'll save about $4000 over new and get an engine every bit as good as new ( per Cummins, they say "better than new"), along w/ a Cummins warranty that is "bumper to bumper" parts and labor for 2000 hours or 24 months

Approx pricing: 6BTA 5.9 315/330 Diamond complete w/ NEW ZF gear at $18,750.00
Add $1100 for the 370 Diamond
Delete $3000 for NO TRANSMISSION

6CTA 8.3 430 HP (450Hp metric) Re-man engine complete w/ instruments, harnesses, etc. but w/o marine gear and mounts @ $18,600.00 each FOB my shop
Add approx $4500 for a new Twin Disc or ZF transmission, depending upon the style or type.

6BT 5.9 210/220 @ $11,950.00 Bobtail
4BT 3.9 150/155 @ $10,200.00 Bobtail

These are COMPLETE pkgs........FOB Our facility

Terms: 50% down w/ order--factory delivery about 5-8 weeks as each engine custom is built to spec.. Balance due before pick-up or shipment. ADD $200 per engine for export crating.
