Thanks for the information Rawleigh. Damn, I wished I had asked the question a month ago- could have sent my spare props out for that coating. No time left now, but I think I'll send my soon-to-be-spare props out for the coating to have them ready for the next haul. Guess I'll try the paste wax recommendation, and then I'll be cleaning these for a while, I wanted an excuse to get new dive gear anyway...
I'm familiar with the sprayed metal coating technology, they use it on concrete structures to spray on zinc for cathodic protection systems. Used it on a building and a bridge once. The machine makes the most horrible LOUD screaming sound you ever heard when it's spraying metal. Basically it's an electric arc welder in front of a compressed air nozzle that spits out the melted metal. I wonder what metals are in their anti-fouling concoction.
One question though: the article says the Barnacle Blok coating is somewhat rough. I wonder, did you notice a loss of prop efficiency after getting the coating? If bottom paint costs 3-4 knots, what does this stuff cost? How rough was it? I'm going to ask the company all that stuff too, but put more weight in your first-hand experience.
I also wonder how this compares to the ceramic coatings that are out. My boatyard here in Fla recommended against the ceramic, simply because it's expensive and rubs off the first time you dig into some sand.
Thanks for the info!
