In my distant youth, I bought the second new car of my life, a 1977 Chevy Impala two door coupe, brown in color. $3200. First new car was a 1976 Ford Torino fastback coupe, baby shit green in color, that was mercifully totalled in a rear end collision by a speeding Grosbeak in a broke dick pickup that had insurance. paid $3700 for the Torino and got enough to buy the Impala from the Grosbeak's bookie.
The Impala had a big V-8 and the first radial tires I'd ever had. Could do 125 on the then new I-12 with complete control. Gas was 30 cents a gallon. I used to make the 45 mile drive to a country courthouse down I-12 and up I-55 in 20 minutes. Back then all lawyers had complete immunity from speeding tickets. Impala met its end on a city street when flames came out from under the dash and ignited my three-tone plastic lawyer shoes and burned the crap out of my feet. A guy in an 18 wheeler rushed up with a fire ext. and put my feet out - even burned my two tone polyester lawyer leisure suit - and wanted to know if he should try to put the Impala out, which was now a funeral pyre. "Nope, let 'er burn, my feet need it more than the brown car" was my reply. By the time the fire trucks arrived the Impala was a melted heap of rubble, and my bookie paid off.
I used the payoff to buy a second hand diesel Mercedes that I drove for 21 years and sold for more than I paid for it to my fovorite waiter at the watering hole I eat lunch at every day. Mr. Willie is still driving it some 36 years after it was born in Bavaria. To me, cars are a total waste of money. Spend your money on your Bertram. Or if you want a real thrill, buy a hi performance airplane, but write a will first.
