Well, getting to feel like an expert on aluminum refinishing. Cut to the chase - take it down with acid with some Dawn in it to wet the surface real good, scrub it with a nylon brush, let it sit for about 5 minutes, then take a stainless steel scrub pad and scrubb it good, will take all the crud off, but leave a scratched surface. Then take some Flitz metal polish and some 0000 steel wool and polish it out, then wash the part in warm water and Dawn, rinse and let air dry. Then polish with a cloth buffing wheel and jeweler's rouge to a high polish.
How to coat it? I have tried several methods, including Aluma Glow, Rupp's, etc. and have concluded that the best finish is just plain ole - you guessed it - Corrosion X. Let it soak in overnight, wipe it off, if you see any dry spots, put some more on, and forget it for a year. CX penetrates the pores of the metal right now, leaves a nice finish when it dries, and a little goes a long way.
Feel like I've been chasing my tail.
