As part of our repower and refurbish project, this was quite an eye opener... how flimsy this whole area was. We did a similar job to the one diagramed by Capt. Pat, and not two years after it payed off in spades.
We hit something in the dark at 15kts that actually bent the strut and shaft (curiously no prop damage). Not one bit of damage to the hull- not even a stress crack.
I am sure if this happened with the original configuration the repair would have been a salvage job as the hole in the boat would have equalled the strut pad.
This is a CRITICAL part of any overhaul on a B31.
