Actually the Branch Davidians, the Waco people, had their origins in the Seventh-day Adventist church. This in turn had its origins in the "Millerite" movement in the USA - a group who followed the teachings of Baptist William Miller who in 1833 concluded that Bible prophecy told the date for the end of the world.
In plain words they were a religous cult. They really had no specific problems with the federal goverment at all.
The problem started when they tried to serve a warrant for an NFA violation that was never proved in court.
The FBI failed to understand that the Davidians belived the raid was part of a prophecy come true, something that had to do with the fifth seal of Revelations.
If the FBI negotiators had realized this, they would have backed off and allowed the situation to cool off and eventually it would have been settled in a non-violent manner. We all know from Iraq what happens when religous zealots are pushed to extremes.
I on the other hand am not a cult or zealot ready to do war. I work within the system to rid myself of the 800lb gorilla I carry around on my back in a non violent manner.
I am smart enough to realize that if I pulled a bone head move like the Davidians, that uncle sam is going to show up with a tank and bulldoze right over me with nary a thought about doing so.
6 out of the 10 voices in my head tell me to be nice, even to sail boaters. Just ask Patrick.
